This particular page has information about the Croatians who settled
in Whatcom County, Washington.
Did you know that long before Washington became a state
in 1889, Croatians were working there as fishermen, sailors, laborers,
farmers, and merchants? "South Slavic Immigration in America"

Many of the Croatians settled in Aberdeen, WA and also
in Roslyn, WA. The ones who settled in Aberdeen logged in the
winter and fished in the summer. The ones who settled in Rosyln
mined in the winter and came to Bellingham in the summer to fish.
By the way, a person who went fishing who looked like they weren't
going make it were called "Shoemakers".
The very first Croatian marriage in Whatcom County
was between John Mardesich and Mattea Martinolich on June 18,
1892. His parents were Nicholas Mardesich and Catherine Soflich
and her parents were Anthony Martinolich and Dominica Nicolich.

I would especially like to put some pages of Croatian Family Trees
and other information along with stories and anecdotes about the
families. I have been researching the weddings and have almost
150 in some detail (parents lof the bride and groom, witnesses,
ages, and sometimes occupations) then I have other marriages where
all I know is the bride, groom, and date of marriage. I have a
long way to go on this project, so if you have any information
or find mistakes please let me know.
An example story (this is true): Mr. Andrew Vujovich
had a brand new El Camino pick-up, he also had a horseshoe nailed
to his fence for good luck. One day he backed into the fence with
his pick-up and dented it. He got so mad that he took the horseshoe
and threw it as hard as he could. Well, the horseshoe went out
of his yard into his neighbor's yard, broke the kitchen window,
and landed in the dishwater as Mrs. Lena Costanti was doing her
dishes and nearly scared her to death. She came running out of
the house, horseshoe in hand, yelling that Andrew had tried to
kill her. Of course he didn't mean to send the horseshoe through
her window and appologized for it. He also fixed her window, all
the while complaining of the bad luck that the horseshoe had brought

This article was given to me by Gordy Tweit, our local
"Fairhaven" history buff. He got this out of a paper
called "The Shield" below the article is the Editor's
note, please read that before you pass judgement on it. When I
first read it, I laughed, then I cried. It brought back so many
memories of my grandparents and the "old" Croatians
who talked in this type of broken English and gave us so much
in the way of memories and heritage. The picture above is that
of Vincent Vrani. I hope this article does the same for you as
it did for me. And I quote:
"Forty year ago I leava Dalmatia becausa de country
no dam good. I lika da peop and I like da weath but the Keengs
and Queens and da resta dos dam Hapsburgs wera too mucha for me.
Me! Winch! dis old United States he suit me fine. Forty year I
leeve in dis Puget Sound and for twenty year I feesh for me. Some
tam I maka monet, some tam I'ma go broke lika hell. But all da
tam I'ma treated alright--all da tam all da peop--my friends--shaka
hand wit me and say, "Winch, you old son of a gun how are
you?" All da tam I lika it here, and all da tam de peop he

Twenty year I worka for dis companese, twenty year
I liva on Liza Island. Fifteen year I boss de Netfield. De beeg

for United States and give Austria Hungaria hell. I always say

not a German, dat I'ma not a Austrian--hellano! I'ma American--a
holata better American den soma dese W.W.I. stiffas who tinka
dey can shoota offa da mout round old Winch causa he born in Dalmatia.
I feex heem. No man worka very long in da webfield or feesha for
da companese while I be boss who donta stand up for a U.S. I buya
da Bon every dam tam he comes out--I geeve Y.C.A.M. and C.K. and
da Salvash and da Reda da Cross. You betcha mee--Winch, and my
children, he all geeve too, and I cana leek hella outa any my
countreemen who open da trap against dis countree. Well! I guess
I saya enough.
Meester Mikelin--what da hella you calla your side
keek. You tella heem hurry up and senda over da Island dos down
haul lizzies. Crista mighty how he teenk you catcha feesh when
you no can leefta da trap. Gooda bye."
(*Editor's nolte: Lest it appear that we might be attempting
to poke fun at the individual pictured above, here and now we
take this public opportunity of attesting our high and sincere
public regard for Vincent Vrani, the superintendent of the netfields
on Eliza Island. His language at times may become violent and
is always lurid and syncopated; his voice is like nothing on earth
so much as the roar of a sorely wounded bull sea lion; and on
near approach his breath intensley reminiscent of concentrated
garlic, but the old boy is the salt of the earth. By blood and
birth at least entitled to two years of pro-German or Austrianism.
Winch entered the war on the side of the allies on August 1st,
1914. Absolutely loyal in his Americanism, he daily exemplifies
that same sort of loyalty in his work for the Company. Among all
of the employees of this company with whom the editor has had
intimate aquaintanship for many years, we know of no one of them
for whom we hold a greater admiration for rugged honesty, loyalty,
and all around worth than this same jazz talking melting pot American,
